A Relaxing Stay at KOA East Asheville:
Nestled in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, KOA East Asheville offers a serene retreat for those looking to escape into nature without sacrificing modern conveniences. I recently took out my Taxa Mantis (Lady Mantis) on her second trip since I purchased her this spring, and she did not disappoint. This campground provided the perfect backdrop for her to shine, and it's an ideal destination for families, solo adventurers, or anyone seeking a peaceful getaway in the mountains. With easy access to downtown Asheville, a variety of outdoor activities, and a laid-back, friendly vibe, KOA East Asheville is an excellent choice for any camper.
Here’s my detailed experience and a few key insights to help you plan your visit.
Location: Gateway to the Blue Ridge
KOA East Asheville is beautifully tucked away along a peaceful creek, with towering trees providing ample shade and a sense of privacy. It’s a short 10-minute drive from downtown Asheville, making it easy to experience the vibrant art scene, unique shops, and world-class dining the city has to offer. For outdoor enthusiasts, the campground's location is also ideal for exploring the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the famous Biltmore Estate.
A Welcoming Campground
From the moment I arrived at KOA East Asheville, I was greeted by friendly staff who made me feel right at home. This campground strikes a perfect balance between modern conveniences and nature’s tranquility. Whether you’re camping in an RV, a tent, or opting for one of their cozy cabins, there's something for everyone. I stayed in one of their full-hookup RV sites along the river, which offered beautiful water views and a peaceful ambiance.
One of the most memorable parts of my stay was opening the Lady Mantis's back hatch, lying in bed with a cup of coffee, and watching the sunset melt into the horizon. The tranquil sound of the river flowing just outside the hatch, paired with the colorful glow of the sky as the day turned to night, made it a perfect way to wind down. It felt like I had a front-row seat to nature’s evening show, all from the comfort of my bed.
During the day, the campground was lively with families and children floating down the river in inner tubes, laughing and enjoying the water. But come evening, a quiet transformation took place. The serene sounds of crickets and frogs from the river bend filled the night air, and it felt as though the hustle and bustle of the day had disappeared. It was a beautiful and peaceful contrast.
Lady Mantis: Perfect for the Experience
This trip marked the second adventure for my Taxa Mantis (fondly named Lady Mantis) since I got her this spring, and she was the perfect companion for this journey. The compact yet efficient design of the Mantis made it easy to navigate the campground and set up quickly. The full-hookup site worked seamlessly with Lady Mantis's setup, and I was able to enjoy all the modern comforts of an RV while still feeling immersed in the beauty of nature.
Campground Amenities
KOA East Asheville stands out with its thoughtful amenities designed for comfort and fun. Here’s what you can expect:
Swimming Pool & Playground: Great for families, the kids’ playground and pool area are a hit. There's even a dog park for your four-legged friends to run around and stretch.
Fishing Pond & Nature Trails: If you enjoy fishing or just want to take a leisurely walk, the fishing pond and nature trails offer peaceful outdoor activities without needing to leave the campground.
General Store: Need supplies? The well-stocked general store has everything from firewood and snacks to camping essentials, making it easy to pick up last-minute items.
Clean, Well-Maintained Facilities: The bathhouses were spotless, and the laundry facilities were convenient—ideal for those on longer stays.
Proximity to Asheville: A Major Plus
One of the best aspects of KOA East Asheville is its proximity to all the local attractions. After spending a day hiking nearby trails or fishing, I found it easy to venture into Asheville for a meal or some city exploration. Some restaurants that I highly recommend include:
Biscuit Head: A must-visit for breakfast or brunch lovers—those fluffy, giant biscuits are worth the trip alone.
Cúrate: An upscale Spanish tapas restaurant in downtown Asheville, perfect for those seeking a more refined dining experience.
12 Bones Smokehouse: If you're a fan of BBQ, you can’t leave Asheville without trying this local favorite, known for its delicious ribs and casual atmosphere.
A Few Considerations
While I thoroughly enjoyed my time at KOA East Asheville, there are a few things to keep in mind. Some of the RV sites are quite close together, which might not provide as much privacy as you'd like, especially if the campground is full. However, the natural beauty and well-maintained grounds more than compensate for the slightly tight quarters.
During peak seasons, like fall when the leaves are changing, the campground can get quite busy, so it’s best to book your stay well in advance.
Final Thoughts: A Gem in the Mountains
KOA East Asheville offers the perfect combination of mountain tranquility and access to Asheville’s vibrant culture. Whether you're looking for outdoor adventures, quiet relaxation, or a bit of both, this campground delivers. The proximity to Asheville, coupled with the friendly staff and thoughtful amenities, makes it an ideal spot for a mountain retreat.
